Insurgency in the North Caucasus
The insurgency in the North Caucasus continues despite the official end of the decade-long Russian "counter-terrorist operation" in Chechnya on 15 April 2009. The violence appears to be concentrated mostly in the North Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Dagestan, Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria, with only occasional clashes and bombings elsewhere (including Moscow and North Ossetia), but there are also concerns it may compromise safety of the planned 2014 Winter Olympics.
